All you need to know about cycling vacations with kids

Family cycling is a wonderful adventure, a journey in the open air, in contact with nature and the traditions of the places crossed. A week on the road will teach children the dimension of travel and that each destination must be conquered one kilometer at a time.

The itineraries by bike (or on seat, child trailer, tandem, etc.) are specially designed for young children: short, easy and on cycle paths.

Easy stages

We can assure you that the hard part will not be motivating your children, but keeping up with them!

An average of 30 km a day, flat and away from traffic, to ride at a leisurely pace, taking your time to visit the villages you come across, stopping at playgrounds and picnic areas along the bike paths.

Luggage? It is always carried, and not by the Oompa Loompas of the Chocolate Factory, but by our brave right arms: in your panniers just a change of clothes, a snack and personal items!

Your vacation will be even easier if you choose a group tour, with a guide to show you the way and other families to make friends with… because you know, there is strength in numbers!

Reductions for families

A special attention to those who travel with children: bike and family tours offer accommodation even in triple and quadruple rooms, to stay together and above all to enjoy important discounts, always indicated in the price.

A few tips from Girolibero

1. Don’t cut corners
You only have to ride a few miles a day, and you don’t have to do them all at once: stop wherever you like, have a few snacks, visit a few historic centers, and as soon as you come across a swimmable lake… take a dip!

2. Leave the safety anxiety at home
You will be pedaling away from traffic, and if your child is also passing you on a bike, you can afford to keep an eye on him or her from a distance. In fact, remember that kids and teens have no problem passing us!

3. Don’t worry, you can eat!
Many families worry that they won’t be able to make snacks, heat up baby food for the little ones, find a place to stop for lunch… Actually, it’s very simple: the side panniers of the bikes can hold a snack; along the way you’ll find grocery stores and supermarkets to refuel; for a hot meal you’ll find cafes and small restaurants, also available to warm up baby food.

… to know that “there is no such thing as good or bad weather, only good and bad equipment. Come rain or shine, it’s wise to be as well equipped as possible: if the sky doesn’t look good, put a K-Way and a change of clothes in the side pockets (or in the cart if you’re bringing small children); if the sun is beating down, don’t forget sunglasses, sunscreen, and a white tarp to put on top of the cart to keep the hottest rays out.
